Most people might not realize just how much the efforts of missionaries have governed the column of human progress. Whether it is hospitals and good health, schools and better education, or sound doctrine and civil liberty—those who carry the gospel to distant lands have left their mark on history. Missionary work has done more for […]
If frequency counts for anything (it does), the command to “love one another” is one we should carefully consider. It is recorded nearly a dozen times in the New Testament. Interestingly, three of the key New Testament apostles record it in their epistles, each emphasizing a different facet. Paul says that our love should be […]
“Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.” Proverbs 16:24 The theme of “one another” reminds us that our fellowship together should be interactive. This requires communication, and the Bible sets forth three ways to speak to one another. BY THE SCRIPTURES “Comfort one another with these words” […]
Some people hardly cast a shadow in passing. But concerning Joshua we read: “Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua…” (Jos. 24:31). We live in a materialist society obsessed with simple facts and giving precious little time to weighing the deeper meanings that […]
Our Lord knew the value of table conversation. He knew people were more relaxed and open to receive spiritual food as they ate physical food. Conflict at Philippi was inevitable. As we see from Acts 16, the church there consisted of Jewish business women, Roman soldiers, and a teen girl who had been delivered from a demon and likely had some emotional scars. Their dramatic testimonies produced a fervor for the gospel that was indicated by Paul’s letter to them. […]
The familiar time-proven quatrain says it well: To live above with the saints we love, Oh, that will be glory! But to live below with the saints we know That’s another story! It is true that when we all get to heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be! The day will break, the […]
The first mention of foot washing (in Gen. 18:4-5) emphasises the benefits of rest and refreshment. Self-centeredness is the default position of fallen humanity. Tragically, it infiltrates modern Christendom with many maintaining that the church is primarily geared toward pleasing people and meeting their felt needs. During His sojourn on earth, however, the Lord Jesus […]
