“But Daniel purposed in his heart…” (Dan 1:8). The door of history pivots on a relative handful of decisions. Here we read about young Daniel’s choice to guard himself from defilement. His resolve set him apart from the crowd, equipped him for God’s use, and changed the direction of world empires. When Don Calhoun made […]
To the writers of [the New Testament Epistles] this present life was only an incident. It was lived, with a due sense of responsibility, as a preface to sharing the timeless life of God Himself. To these men this world was only a part, and because of the cumulative result of human sin a highly […]
The old line, “The New is in the Old concealed; the Old is in the New revealed,” is certainly true here! What notes of truth in Psalm 69 are transposed to a higher key in the New Testament? Psalm 69:4, “Those who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head,” is quoted in […]
JESUS and the RESCUE MISSION: “He trusted in the Lord, let Him rescue Him…!” (Ps 22:8). These words were flung in mockery at the sinner’s Savior. The One who came on a rescue mission of monumental proportions had no one to rescue Him. But if He had been saved from the cross, sinners like Jerry […]
“What is man, that You should exalt him, that You should set Your heart on him” (Job 7:17)? Considering the seeming infinitude of space, the psalmist asked a similar question, but with the opposite emphasis: “What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?” (Ps 8:4). Of course this is self-defeating. You […]
The motto of West Virginia: Montani Semper Liberi (Mountaineers Are Always Free). Jesus invites us to higher ground, to live in the joy and freedom of the life that pleases God. […]
“Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and then to enter His glory?” (Lk 24:26, BSB). Sauntering through an antique store, something catches your eye. It’s exquisite, the craftsmanship unmatched. Slowly you turn over the price tag. Gulp! That much? As we move from the glorious triumph of Psalm 68 to Psalm 69, we realize we’re […]
CHRIST ONCE-FOR-ALL: Christ once coming into the world, once going to the cross, once entering the sanctuary, once saving every believing sinner—accomplishing infinitely more than all the offerings sacrificed by every priest in every religion in every land in every age! “Once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin […]
