CHRIST the HIDING PLACE: “A Man will be as a hiding place…” (Isa 23:2). R.G. LeTourneau (1888–1969), was a renowned inventor of earth-moving machinery. LeTourneau machines were nearly 70 percent of the earth-moving equipment and engineering vehicles used by Allied forces during World War II. Raised in a Christian home, he tells of his conversion […]
“He must increase, but I must decrease” (Jn 3:30). This isn’t exactly a petition, but it could easily become one. Lord, let me daily decrease so that You might increase in me! Our New Testament speaks of increased faith (Lk 17:5), increased blessing in the gospel (1 Cor 3:6-7), increasing fruits of righteousness (2 Cor […]
Alfred Wiener, a Jew born in Frankfurt, Germany, became familiar with “St. Matthew’s Passion” by Bach and Handel’s “Messiah” through his love of good music. When Hitler came to power, Weiner ended up in Buchenwald. He grew deathly sick. As he lay in the darkness, not knowing whether he was delirious or dreaming, an abyss […]
If there was one man young Josh hated, it was the man who abused his mother. But God changed Josh, then his hateful heart, then his drunkard dad—and then the whole town! […]
Singing joyfully to the Rock, or doubting and complaining at Massah and Meribah? Some choice! Although untitled, Psalm 95 is referred to by the author of the Epistle to the Hebrews as belonging to David (Heb 4:7). It is the first in a series of songs of festal joy, but not without a solemn warning, […]
CHRIST the DOER: “I always DO those things that please Him” (Jn 8:29). If we are to follow Christ, we will also be doers. As He said, “If you know these things, happy are you if you do them” (Jn 13:17). We do well to follow the advice of Mary, “Whatever He says to you, […]
“Preserve me, O God, for in You I put my trust” (Ps 16:1). Here’s a prayer to offer on behalf of our young people, especially those at college. William MacDonald writes: “Every day you may sit under the instruction of unregenerate men and women who have no love for your Savior or your Bible. At […]
Want to help advance the gospel? Evaluate needs: see your area as a mission field; map population centers; identify people groups. Assess opportunities: pray for “open doors” (Acts 14:27; 1 Cor. 16:9; 2 Cor. 2:12; Col. 4:3); observe where people gather; look for vulnerabilities (Lk. 4:18) as entry-ways to the good news; observe and develop […]
“In the multitude of my anxieties within me, Your comforts delight my soul” (Ps 94:19). Amazing! When dividing a poem, we’re always in danger of dissecting the butterfly to see how it flies—and then it doesn’t fly anymore. Still, I think it’s helpful to see the various movements directing us through the psalm. Psalm 94 appears […]
