If divine wisdom arranged the path of water drops and lightning bolts, would it not include your path, too?
In Job 28:20-28, Job repeats the question he asked in verse 12. Where, oh where, is wisdom to be found? Obviously he isn’t interested in an advanced degree in some esoteric field of study. The wisdom he wants is one hidden vein. Yes, “As for the earth, from it comes bread, but underneath…” (v 5), what is it hiding? Simple men can find sufficient truth to feed on like bread that grows on the surface, within easy reach. But Job is looking for treasure that has been hidden from his eyes. If God is just, why the injustices he has been inundated with? If God is loving, why does he feel abandoned by the Almighty? If God is mighty, why has he not been delivered before now? The information Job is seeking cannot be found in the commonly known facts of life. His friends, eloquent and incisive though they are, have been unable to point him in the right direction. The answer to this Big Question “is hidden from the eyes of all living” (v 21). In fact, even “Destruction and Death say, ‘We have heard a report about it with our ears’” (v 22). The two big Ds have been around since the Fall. One eradicates human effort and the other extinguishes human existence. Yet even they, with their massive impact on humanity, have only heard about wisdom but can’t help in the search. Wait, there is Someone who has the answer we need! “God understands its way, and He knows its place” (v 23). He’s been around forever, long before death and destruction arrived. He set the wind in motion and planned the zig-zag path of the lightning bolt. He knows everything, so of course He knows where wisdom is found. “He saw [it]…declared it…prepared it…searched it out” (v 27). In fact, wisdom is found in Him alone (v 28)!
