“Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart” (Ps 37:4).
This is not a “trick” promise; the secret should be obvious. If you begin by assuming, in this desert world, that “all my springs are in You” (87:7), promise will change to possession. If we set our hearts on Him, our desires align with His.
Recently I was reading about the South Pacific island of Nauru, eight-and-a-half miles square. Its per capita income—from phosphate produced by bird droppings—surpasses any oil-rich Arab nation. In fact, it’s the wealthiest democracy in the world. They have a curious custom called bubutsi, which allows a person to ask anything from a friend or relative for as long as they want it. “I bought a new car a couple of years ago,’’ a Nauruan official said. “I had hardly driven it when a friend asked me for the keys. I haven’t seen it since.” Thankfully our Lord isn’t impoverished by our asking. He will, and can ably afford to, respond to every God-honoring desire.
