THE LOWLY JESUS: “I am…lowly” (Mt 11:29). Here are statements made by and about the Lord Jesus during His earthly sojourn that show His amazing humility. As to His career path, they said with derision, “Is this not the carpenter?” (Mk 6:3), but He explained, “I am among you as the One who serves” (Lk 22:27). Regarding His credentials, they asked, “How does this Man know letters, having never studied?” (Jn 7:15); He replied in grace, “As My Father taught Me, I speak these things” (Jn 8:28). Concerning His reputation, they said, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” (Mt 8:20); but He said, having been rejected from Nazareth, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head” (Mt 8:20). As to His treatment by others, they said, “Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!” (Mt 11:19). But He said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do” (Lk 23:34).
