CHRIST the COURAGEOUS: “I am with you always” (Mt 28:20). I just read an incident about John Calvert, an Englishman among Fiji savages. The king’s daughter was ill, and Calvert was asked to provide medicine. But as she improved, the medicine men became involved. So Calvert stopped treatment, saying any improvement would be claimed for the pagan gods. The daughter soon grew worse, but after special pleading, the missionary gave her a stimulant. When she began moving in spasms, the king cried, “You have killed her.” Calvert snatched up his medicines and—feigning great offence—left, fearing for his life. The next day the king sent word that Calvert should bring help for another sick child of his. Calvert sent word back: “Having killed his daughter last night, it is not lawful for a missionary to kill two children of a king in such short order.” The king relented, his children were moved under the care of the missionaries, and his daughter became a vibrant follower of Christ soon after.
