CHRIST, GOD’S ANOINTED (Ps 2:2). In his book, The Names and Titles of Christ, Francis Derk explains: Anointing in the OT symbolized the giving of the Holy Spirit and solemn consecration to the service of God. It was performed on the three offices of the theocracy: Prophet, Priest and King…In the fullest sense it was applied to the Messiah, to whom the Spirit was given without measure, as in Him were combined the three offices (Jn 1:32, 34, 41; 3:34).…The oil of anointing was made of rare ingredients, indicating the unique qualities for the anointing. They were made of “principal spices” and were described as pure, sweet, holy, select, costly, precious, prepared, and fragrant (Ex 30:22-33; 37:29; Ps 45:7-8).…God’s Anointed is the One that has “the seven Spirits of God” (Rev 3:1). Isaiah 11:2 explains this as: “the Spirit of the Lord…, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.”
