CHRIST our TREASURE: “To you who believe He is precious” (1 Pet 2:7). The word “precious” is not an adjective but a noun. Hence the RV translates it, “For you therefore who believe He is the preciousness.” He is the essence and sum of all preciousness! Cyrus is reported to have said to Croesus, “The chests in which I keep my riches are the hearts and affections of my people.” So Christ is God’s treasure within us. Spurgeon comments: For a thing to be rightly called “precious,” it should have three qualities: it should be rare; it should have an intrinsic value, and it should possess useful properties. All three things meet in our adorable Lord. As for rarity, He is unique—incomparably, immeasurably, inconceivably precious! As for useful qualities, where else shall we find such a variety of uses in one place? His life, His death, His resurrection, His present ministry and second coming—all meet our needs and delight our hearts! All good things meet in Him, and in such profusion.
