The Father wants us to know that the Lord Jesus has no rivals. He sits supreme over all!
Psalm 110 is just seven verses long, but it’s the most often quoted psalm in the New Testament. There are two glorious truths about the Lord Jesus that His Father never tires of telling us. We’ll think of one in this meditation, and the other in the next. So first, He is quick to remind us of the occasion when “The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool’” (Ps 110:1). How delighted the Father is in His Son! Absolutely everything the Son does pleases Him. For example? “The Lord shall send the rod of Your strength out of Zion. Rule in the midst of Your enemies!” (v 2). There is no one more capable of overseeing God’s vast empire than His Son. He has been especially adept in eradicating His enemies by—turning them into friends! I know. I was one: “when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son” (Rom 5:10). What is the result of His beneficent rule in our hearts? “Your people shall be volunteers (KJV, “willing”) in the day of Your power; in the beauties of holiness, from the womb of the morning , you have the dew of Your youth” (Ps 110:3). What an exquisite description! The first line might be translated, “Your people shall be spontaneous” (Heb, nedâbâ), the word for free-will offerings! It isn’t His power that forces us; it’s His love that compels us (2 Cor 5:14). And He’s shown us the beauties there are in holiness! We never imagined that. Also He is the long-sought fountain of youth! We who trust Him, “Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day” (4:16). Christ has made it possible so the new you is never more than one day old! With His Father, we await His final triumph. Then everything will be eternally new.
