CHRIST BEGOTTEN: “The Lord has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You’” (Ps 2:7). This is the first occasion where our Lord is spoken of as begotten of the Father. Christ’s “begottenness” is a matter for serious thought, but some modern translations are clearly wrong when they translate the last phrase “today I have become Your Father.” Isaiah 9:6 makes it clear that the “child” was “born” but the “Son” was “given.” Christ’s begetting refers to His coming forth in various ways. There are 5 occurrences of Christ being declared as the monogenes, “only begotten” and each seems to refer to a different occasion: eternally “in the bosom of the Father” (Jn 1:18); given as a gift in incarnation (3:16-18; 1 Jn 4:9); manifesting the Father’s glory during His public ministry (Jn 1:14); in the triumph of His resurrection (Acts 13:33; Rev 1:5); and at the recognition of His High Priestly ministry (Heb 5:5). By grace He will bring many sons to glory, but only one Son came from glory!
