JESUS as a MAN among MEN: “I am among you as the One who serves” (Lk 22:27). Why would common humans—weak humans, sinful humans, broken humans—not be repelled by the world’s only perfect Man? In fact, the opposite was true. “He could not be hidden” (Mk 7:24). Sinners like Zacchaeus actually sought Him out. Surely this was by design. He came as a poor Man (2 Cor 8:9), emptying Himself of His unimaginable wealth. And He was certainly a humble Man (Php 2:8), condescending to men of low estate. Many saw Him in His service as a weary Man (Jn 4:6; Mt 8:24), expending His energies in the care of others. And who would doubt He was a praying Man (Lk 6:12; 9:18; 11:1), not flaunting His powers but living in moment-by-moment dependence on His Father. Or who would not appreciate that He was a gracious Man (Lk 4:22), even His adversaries agreeing (Jn 7:46). Ultimately, as a Man of sorrows, He identified with us all, even unto death!
