CHRIST the SIMPLE ANSWER: “‘How can we know the way?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way…’” (Jn 14:5-6). Frederick Baedeker received permission to distribute Bibles in the far-flung prisons of Tsarist Russia. At one near the Black Sea, he had given Bibles to the general population, when the guard told of a murderer held in a dungeon. Given access to the man, the murderer told him, “I can’t read.” So pulling a little booklet with only three pages from his pocket, Baedeker said, “I think you can read this.” There wasn’t a word in it! “What does it mean?” asked the prisoner. “The black page illustrates the darkness of our sinful hearts. The red page points to the blood of Christ that can clean us of all sin. If we put our trust in Him, our heart can be made white like the last page. Suppose you pray this prayer: ‘Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.’” The prisoner shook as he turned the pages. “Thank you, sir, a thousand times, for bringing this message to a wretch like me.”
