“And Miriam answered them: ‘Sing to the Lord, for He has triumphed gloriously! The horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea!’” (Ex 15:21).

What a day! After centuries of slavery, at last they were free! Moses’ big sister led the women in this song of praise. They had not merely escaped Egypt, but their enemies had been annihilated. This story is used throughout the Old Testament as the measure of God’s power to deliver—total victory.

When we come to the New Testament, what is the corresponding event? It is the resurrection of Christ. Moses met with the Lord on Mt Transfiguration and “spoke of His decease (Gk, exodos) which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem” (Lk 9:31). That exodus began with Christ dying as our Passover Lamb but continued with His triumph over our Last Enemy as He rose from the dead. Now we stand with Him on resurrection ground; sin, death, and hell are no longer able to terrify. “Sing to the Lord, for He has triumphed gloriously!”
