“Lord, I will follow You, but…” (Lk 9:61).
God’s answers are wiser than our asking, His responses fuller than our requests, His delight in hearing us greater than our desire to seek His help. We ask what we think would satisfy our little hearts; He gives what satisfies His mighty heart. He does not give according to our need, but “according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Php 4:19). You can’t out-ask Him. You can’t out-think Him. You can’t out-give Him: He “is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think” (Eph 3:20). Could prayer be made any easier? Pray at any time, under any circumstance, in any location, for any need. No need to know what direction to go, or what clothes to wear, or what words to say, or what position to take. But too busy to pray?
William Wilberforce wrote: “I must secure more time for private devotions. I have been living far too public for me. The shortening of devotions starves the soul, it grows lean and faint. I have been keeping too late hours.” Maybe us too?
