“The righteousness of Your testimonies is everlasting; give me understanding, and I shall live” (Ps 119:144).
Few things last. Shakespeare penned the words:
“Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player,
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more” (Macbeth).
Or in more contemporary terms:
“Some things matter, some things don’t,
A few things last, but most things won’t.”
But here, says the psalmist, is one thing you can count on. You can teach your little great-grandchildren the testimonies of the Lord, and the principles will still be true when they’re as old as you are. I had a professor who wrote a science text, but much of it was obsolete before he could get it published! No need for “future shock” when we trust in the rightness of God’s everlasting truth. Adam learned the hard way that the devil lies and God tells the truth. Since then, almost everything has changed, but this hasn’t: the devil’s still lying, and God’s still telling the truth. We need first to understand His Word, and then to live it!
