“‘Give me a blessing; since you have given me land in the South [Negev], give me also springs of water.’ And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs” (Jdg 1:15).
Today we’d say Achsah was a chip off the old block, like her father Caleb, eager to possess her possession. The word “Negev” means parched. She wanted to be fruitful, so she needed water, something in short supply. Notice she asked for “springs,” and received what she asked for.
This world is also a desert. But the Lord has made available—to those who ask—the upper and lower springs: the Spirit and the Word. What life-giving fruitfulness! But we must ask! “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ASK Him!” (Lk 11:13)—not His presence, but His power. “We…do not cease to pray for you, and to ASK that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding” (Col 1:9). Ask!
