October 15, 2024 — Multiplication Problems

There is inherent danger in this 3M which still brings men down today: maids, money, and might.

How pleased the Lord was with Solomon’s reply! “Because this was in your heart,” said the Lord, “and you have not asked riches or wealth or honor or the life of your enemies, nor have you asked long life—but have asked wisdom and knowledge for yourself, that you may judge My people over whom I have made you king—wisdom and knowledge are granted to you; and I will give you riches and wealth and honor, such as none of the kings have had who were before you, nor shall any after you have the like” (2 Chron 1:11-12). Clearly, that was the Number 1 answer! Now in 1:13-17, Solomon begins to marshal the resources he thinks he will need to effect his plan. He established three strategic cities, stationing his rapid-deployment charioteers there, with one fortress at Hazor to control the northern approach from Syria, one at Megiddo to oversee the Jezreel Valley, and one at Gezer to guard the road to Jerusalem. He marshaled “one thousand four hundred chariots and twelve thousand horsemen” (v 14), and 480 of their stables may be seen at Megiddo today. But a successful nation must have military and economic strength. Thus we also read, “Also the king made silver and gold as common in Jerusalem as stones” (v 15). But Solomon, isn’t there a third leg to the stool? Yes, there must also be spiritual strength and, long before, Moses had warned Israel’s future kings, “he shall not multiply horses for himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses, for the Lord has said to you, ‘You shall not return that way again.’ Neither shall he multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away; nor shall he greatly multiply silver and gold for himself” (Deut 17:16-17). It won’t be long until foreign wives are added, and the troubling trifecta will be complete.
