“That which has been is what will be, that which is done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun” (Eccl 1:9).

In this age of moral relativism, there is a popular notion afoot: “No man ever steps in the same river twice.” But that quotation is its own refutation, proving Solomon’s point. Why? This cutting-edge aphorism was written by Heraclitus of Ephesus centuries before Paul penned the letter to the Ephesians! So it looks like our Post-modernist friends have stepped in it—again!

Of course superficial things change, but the essentials remain the same “under the sun.” Real dynamic and fundamental change can only come from beyond the sun. The dark river that flows from Adam’s sin until now is described in Ephesians 2:1-3. “But God” (v 4) plucked us out of that polluted effluence and lifted us up beyond the sun to “sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus” (v 6). And how? Praise His Name, by our Lord Jesus going under those turbid waves for us!
