November 9, 2021 — O For A Million Tongues To Sing

Imagine singing in a choir with over a million voices. Actually, I plan on doing that some day!

Exodus 14 concludes this way: “Thus Israel saw the great work which the Lord had done in Egypt; so the people feared the Lord, and believed the Lord and His servant Moses” (v 31). That’s encouraging! But two things spring to mind. First, why did it take them so long to believe Him? And second, how soon would it be before they started doubting again? Of course, it isn’t just Israel. It’s the person we see in the mirror each morning. The Epistle to the Hebrews calls unbelief “the sin which so easily ensnares us” (Heb 12:1). In other words, this temptation waits for us at every turn. We’ll see it crop up all the way through life’s journey. Does God really care? Does He know what He’s doing? Why can’t we go our way—isn’t that better? These doubts sound so hollow when we say them out loud, but there they are, showing up in each crisis. O that we might see and reverence and believe Him! Well, let’s not spoil the occasion with too much sermonizing. As they awoke to total victory the next morning (as we believers do each day), the whole multitude broke into song. Imagine! Millions of voices declaring, “I will sing to the Lord, for He has triumphed gloriously! The horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea! The Lord is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation; He is my God, and I will praise Him” (Ex 15:1-2). The song continues, “Who is like You, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like You, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?” (v 11). How happy we should be that, since there is only one true God, this is the One! Let’s sing the praises of this God who never lets us down, never yields to the foe, never loses a battle: “Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ” (2 Cor 2:14).
