Seek Him, Desire Him

Why did God, who professedly loves all His creatures, not give such overwhelming evidence of Himself that everyone capable of knowing such a God would find it impossible not to know Him? This is essentially the argument of J. L. Schellenberg in what he calls “the hiddenness of God.” It is based on certain false assertions. First, it assumes that God has not given sufficient evidence of Himself when the Bible says He in fact has. It was not that the human race could not know God, but: “that, when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God” (Rom 1:21). But more, do these atheists want a world where there is no way they can hide from the God they refuse to acknowledge? God wants people to seek Him, to desire Him. He seeks a love relationship with people. He does not intend to force people to know Him. As Paul said: “God did this so that men would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us” (Acts 17:27).
