All My Comfort

James, the 7th Duke of Hamilton, was born at Holyrood Palace, the son of the 6th Duke of Hamilton and his wife, Elizabeth. He succeeded to his father’s title of Duke of Hamilton at the tender age of two. He was educated at Eton and died of tuberculosis aged 14 at Hamilton Palace, the family’s large country house located in Lanarkshire, Scotland. As he lay dying, two ministers came to see him. He pulled a small Bible out from under his pillow and opened it to these words: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing” (2 Tim 4:7-8). “This, sirs,” he said, “is all my comfort.” When his death approached, he called his younger brother to his bed. “And now, Douglas, in a little time you will be a duke, but I shall be a king!” And such is the certain hope of every true child of God.
