“He who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death” (Jas 5:20). When workmen began a year-long $500,000 renovation in 1994 on the Washington monument in DC, they didn’t expect to find graffiti. But that’s exactly what they found. Graffiti from the 1800s discovered when workers removed some marble wainscoting. But it was hardly the kind of message you see scrawled on public buildings, bridges and trains today. It read: “Whoever is the human instrument under God in the conversion of one soul, erects a monument to his own memory more lofty and enduing (sic) than this.” The hand-made inscription can now be viewed by visitors to the monument. No one knows the author. It is simply signed “BFB.” But his assessment could not be more timely. Our Lord’s valuation of one soul proves this: “What profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Mt 16:26).
