The Illuminated Heart

The apostle Paul prayed this for the saints: “that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know…” (Eph 1:17-18). A.W. Tozer writes: Man by reason cannot know God; he can only know about God. When the Spirit illuminates the heart, then a part of the man sees which never saw before; a part of him knows which never knew before, and that with the kind of knowing which the most acute thinker cannot imitate. Man’s reason is a fine instrument and useful within its field. It was not given as an organ by which to know God. Fundamentalism has fallen into the error of textualism, which is simply orthodoxy without the Holy Spirit. Everywhere among conservatives we find persons who are Bible-taught but not Spirit-taught. For a man to understand revealed truth requires an act of God equal to the original act which inspired the text.
