“The friendship of the world is enmity with God” (Jas 4:4). Salvation means the end of hostilities, unconditional surrender to Christ. The resounding victory by Lord Nelson in the Battle of the Nile secured British dominance over the French fleet in the Mediterranean. When French Admiral Blanquet arrived on board Nelson’s flagship, the Vanguard, to surrender, he extended his hand to the one-armed hero. “First your sword,” replied Nelson, “then your hand.” Preaching in Fremantle, Australia, W.P. Nicholson commented on this story: “When you come to Jesus Christ, that is what He says: ‘Hands up! Cease your rebellion; give in, give up here and now!’ That is a hard thing. We are willing to give our money, willing to give a lot of our time. But to say, ‘Lord, everything in my boots and under my hair is yours for time and eternity’—that is a different thing. You have got to abandon yourself to Jesus Christ, spirit, soul and body. You cannot dictate terms to Him.”
