JESUS the PATIENT FARMER: “Others have labored, and you have entered into their labors” (Jn 4:38). Almost every Christian has heard about Hudson Taylor, who blazed a trail for God through China. China Inland Mission brought over 800 missionaries to the country. But few have heard of Karl Gützlaff. Born to a German tailor, his life was changed when he wrote a poem in honor of Kaiser Frederick Wilhelm III, who was reviewing his troops nearby. The poem fell into the king’s hand and, impressed with it, the king decreed he should receive a scholarship. In June of 1821, while at school, he put his trust in Christ. After further training, he sailed first for Java where he studied Chinese, and later entered China. From Gützlaff’s example, Taylor developed a sensitivity to Chinese culture, wearing native dress. Both men were non-denominational, emphasized itinerant evangelism, and lived by faith for support. Taylor called Gützlaff “the father of CIM.” As Jesus said, “One sows and another reaps.”
