CHRIST the RESCUER: “For He rescued us from the domain of darkness…” (Col 1:13). C.I. Schofield, editor of the well-known reference Bible notes, was born into a God-fearing home, but his mother died while he was a baby. As a young man, he served during the U.S. Civil War, and then practiced law in St. Louis, where he lived a successful but spiritually disinterested life. He liked his liquor, and often drank too much. One day Tom McPheeters, an acquaintance, visited his office. After business was done, with his hand on the doorknob, McPheeters turned and asked Schofield why he was not a Christian. The lawyer replied, “I don’t recall ever having been shown how to become a Christian.” From a well-worn New Testament, McPheeters explained the gospel. Then, writes Schofield, “We knelt, and I received Jesus Christ as my Savior. Instantly the chains were broken…the passion for drink was taken away. Divine power did it, wholly of grace. To Christ be all the glory.”
