CHRIST the WINE-MAKER: “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!” (Jn 2:10). As a young preacher, I came to the final night of a series of Bible teaching. Greeting folks at the door, one old Irishman said, “You saved the best wine till last.” I smiled and thanked him for his encouragement, but he quickly took it back, saying, “That’s not what the Bible says! It says, ‘You have kept the good wine until now.’” Then he explained: You don’t have to wait to the end of your life to enjoy the Lord’s sweetest joys; enjoy them now! Scottish poet I.Y. Ewan, in his collection, The Caravanserai, writes the following: He gives to them the heav’nly wine to sup/Whom He anoints,/And also lets them drink the other cup/That disappoints/That, when they prove ’twas but a worthless waste/They thought so fine,/They may the more appreciate the taste/Of better wine.
