JESUS the FRIEND of ENEMIES: “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you” (Mt 5:44). Mitsuo Fuchida, the Japanese commander who led the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec 7, 1941, sat in his cell. In his hand was the testimony of U.S. bombadier Jake DeShazer, who, while suffering at the hands of the Japanese, grew bitter as he saw some of his fellow airmen killed or starved to death. But there he was given a Bible and discovered Christ’s love for him. He determined to return to Japan as a missionary and did so in 1948. Fuchida wondered what kind of power could do this to a man’s heart, and began to read the Bible himself. When he came to the cross and Jesus’ prayer for His enemies, he broke and received the Savior, too. When released, he joined DeShazer in preaching such a loving Savior to large crowds throughout Japan. Many thousands professed faith in Christ.
