July 12 Petition Mission

“And Asa cried out to the Lord his God, and said, ‘Lord, it is nothing for You to help, whether with many or with those who have no power; help us, O Lord our God, for we rest on You, and in Your name we go against this multitude. O Lord, You are our God; do not let man prevail against You!’” (2 Chron 14:11).

Here is the power in prayer for powerless people. First, overwhelmed by an enemy horde, Asa focused instead on this: God plus a mighty army or God plus weaklings equaled the same overwhelming force. Second, when every nerve in our bodies is screaming, “Do something!” the best thing to do is to rest on the Lord. Third, when we seem defenseless, don’t forget our secret weapon! “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe” (Prov 18:10). Fourth, we’re in this thing together, says Asa, because “You are our God” by covenant, and it’s Your reputation at stake: “Do not let man prevail against YOU!”

Like frightened children, the enemy all ran away (v 12)!
