JESUS and the RESCUE MISSION: “He trusted in the Lord, let Him rescue Him…!” (Ps 22:8). These words were flung in mockery at the sinner’s Savior. The One who came on a rescue mission of monumental proportions had no one to rescue Him. But if He had been saved from the cross, sinners like Jerry McAuley would have no hope. Raised in a godless home in Ireland, Jerry emigrated to America and soon became a river thief, boarding vessels at night and stealing all he could. Sent to Sing-Sing Prison for 15 years, he came across an old crime buddy there named Gardner who had been transformed by the gospel. The change was so remarkable that Jerry returned to his cell and began to read the Bible. For four weeks he wrestled with God. At last the words came to him, “Thy sins, which are many, are forgiven.” The chains fell off and McAuley was free. The Water Street Mission became his life ministry, right in the old haunts where he once had been Satan’s slave.
