CHRIST OUR DAYSMAN: Job longed for there to be a go-between, a “daysman between us, that might lay his hand upon us both” (Job 9:33). In the story of infidel turned Bible scholar B.H. Carroll, he writes: “I had turned my back on Christianity and had found nothing in infidelity; happiness was gone, and death would not come. The Civil War had left me a wounded cripple on crutches, utterly poverty-stricken, loaded with debt.…like Job, I felt the need of…a daysman…And thus I approached my twenty-second year.” When his mother begged him to go with her to a camp meeting, he relented. He heard nothing in the preaching, but at the end, the preacher asked, “You that stand aloof from Christianity and scorn us as simple folks, what have you got? Answer honestly before God…My heart answered, “Absolutely nothing.” “Then have you the fairness and courage to try it? You be the judge of the results.” Carroll simply believed Christ; his life was forever changed.
