June 14 Petition Mission

In the Lord I put my trust; how can you say to my soul, ‘Flee as a bird to your mountain’?” (Ps 11:1). The psalmist had clearly learned that, if there is a place to flee in times of distress, it is to the Lord.

This verse reminds me of a story about George Fisk, the relatively unknown initiator of the missionary aviation ministry. Exhausted from portaging boats along an unnavigable section of a river in Borneo, he noticed two hornbills floating overhead. “Look! I’ll do that!” he exclaimed to his porters. To their quizzical looks, he answered by explaining about “mechanical birds.” Though the born-again Borneans still didn’t understand what Fisk meant, they were soon kneeling on the sandy bank, praying with him for an airplane.

It mattered little to Fisk that the natives didn’t understand what they were asking for, because the Lord knew—and answered in His own good time. How wonderful that, when we don’t know what to ask, God still knows what to answer! Pray on!
