CHRIST the MAN of SORROWS: “He is despised and rejected by men, a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief” (Isa 53:3). C.H. Spurgeon writes, “Sometimes God sends His love letters in black-edged envelopes. He allows us to taste the bitterness of want and the desolation of bereavement. If you have lived many years, you have passed through the narrows. We have all been there. It looks as if things have got out of hand, and somehow or other we have been forgotten. When there is no one at hand to say it to you, say it to yourself, “The Lord is faithful, who will not allow the pain to exceed the measurement of my endurance.” His promise: “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it” (1 Cor 10:13). Aren’t you heartened to know that our King in glory is also a Man of sorrows?
