CHRIST the RANSOM: “Then He is gracious to him, and says, ‘Deliver him from going down to the Pit; I have found a ransom’” (Job 33:24). In most cases, during a kidnapping, a ransom price is demanded under threat of violence. We too had been captured by “a strong man, fully armed” (Lk 11:21), but none of our kinsmen could pay the ransom price: “None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him” (Ps 49:7). But what is this? The Son of man willingly left heaven and “gave Himself a ransom for all” (1 Tim 2:6)! No coersion needed! No limit to those who may benefit! No greater price could be paid—Himself! Obviously the Lord Jesus considers His death to be a ransom (Gk, lutron) that releases us from bondage. We who trust in Christ are not only delivered from the Pit; He has also “delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love” (Col 1:13)! Now let’s enjoy our freedom in Christ!
