CHRIST the HEAD: “but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ” (Eph 4:15). Interestingly, the Greek word for “head” is kephale, from the root kapto (in the sense of seizing). With its resident brain as the control center of the body, the head lays hold of every part, directing its functions and seeing to the meeting of its needs. The Lord Jesus is not a figurehead but a functioning Head. He is “the head of all principality and power” (Col 2:10). Though some of these powers were wrested from heaven in the rebellion of Lucifer, they were restored to their rightful Owner when, at Calvary, “having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it” (v 15). He is also the Head of the Church (Col 1:18) and, in local church order, “the head of every man” (1 Cor 11:3). St Vitus’ dance (chorea minor) is a disease where the body acts independently of the head. Let’s “hold the Head” (Col 2:19)!
