CHRIST the LAST ADAM: “‘The first man Adam became a living being.’ The last Adam became a life-giving spirit” (1 Cor 15:45). The Lord Jesus, through His incarnation, became “the second Man” (v 47) and “the last Adam.” As the second Man, He was a new kind of man: “the first man was of the earth, earthy.” But notice that the second Man is not spoken of as “heavenly.” He is “the Lord from heaven.” Adam was like his environment because he was made out of it. “Adam” could well be translated “Dusty,” “for dust you are, and to dust you shall return” (Gen 3:19). But Jesus isn’t like heaven; He is the Lord from heaven—heaven is like Him! As the last Adam, He is the final prototype of a new creation. Adam in creation was the ideal model of “a living being” (1 Cor 15:45) but Christ is of a different order, though truly human in every way but sin. He is “a life-giving spirit.” Praise the Lord! As Eve was to Adam so are we to Christ, “members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones” (Eph 5:30).
