“When he is judged, let him be found guilty, and let his prayer become sin” (Ps 109:7). What a haunting request!

This psalm provides a vivid example of an imprecation, the opposite of a benediction. There are at least 21 other Imprecatory Psalms calling down God’s judgment on His enemies. And while this doesn’t seem to be the spirit of NT Christianity, verse 8 is applied by Peter to Judas (Acts 1:20). Here it may allude to his prototype, Ahithophel, David’s betrayer who also went and hanged himself. Both were intimates (you can’t be betrayed by an enemy, only by a friend). As David said, “It is not an enemy who reproaches me; then I could bear it. Nor is it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me; then I could hide from him. But it was you, a man my equal, my companion and my acquaintance” (Ps 55:12-13). Oh the horror—to KISS the Son of God and then conspire to KILL Him! One translates this: “May even his prayer be considered a crime!” (GNT).
