CHRIST, DEATH’S CONQUEROR: “Knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him” (Rom 6:9). Circus hand Alfred Mace was a most unlikely young man to be listening to William Carter preach that night in a Brixton theater. “But just about midnight,” he writes, “I joined heartily in the well-known refrain, ‘I do believe it, I will believe it; I’m saved through the blood of the Lamb.’” His father, “Jem” Mace, erstwhile pub proprieter, circus promoter and racehorse owner, was also English Boxing Champ. Years later, they were walking together along a street when the now-beloved Bible teacher and evangelist Alfred saw an approaching funeral cortege in the distance. “Here he comes again, Father, and only been beaten once,” said Alfred to “Jem.” “Where is he?” he replied, assuming a boxer’s stance. “There he is,” said the Christian, pointing to the coffin, “and his name is Death.” Thank God for that once!
