“Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, and revive me in Your way” (Ps 119:37).
It’s the relentless battle for the eyes. Not here those whose “eyes bulge with abundance” (73:7) nor the danger of setting something “wicked before my eyes” (101:3), but merely the seemingly endless distractions of “looking at worthless things.” This is one of the supreme dangers of our age. Our eyes can look at so much and yet see so little. “The eye is not satisfied with seeing,” said the Wise Man (Eccl 1:8).
Ah, says David in our lead verse, I have found the antidote to mere existence, to the endless whirl of vapid experiences and wasted opportunities. I need to be personally revived—you plug in the synonyms: reinvigorated, revitalized, reenergized, reanimated, rejuvenated. The “re-s” have it.
Lord, today I need a reboot of my mind, a refresh of life’s screen, a restarting of my relationship with You. I need to see You as if for the first time and to feel the life-surge inside by the new way You show to me.
