April 23 Petition Mission

“Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest’” (Mt 9:37-38).

Paul Rader (1879–1938) was a mighty evangelist for the Lord. He had spoken often to a New York banker about his soul, but to no avail. One day, the Lord seemed to impress Rader with the need to see the man again. In response, he caught a train and immediately went to see his banker friend.

The man was standing in the doorway. “Oh, Rader,” he said, “I’m so glad to see you! I wrote you a telegram begging you to come, but then I tore it up.” “That may be so,” replied the evangelist, “but your message still came to me by way of heaven.” Under deep conviction, the man readily responded this time to the gospel and was saved. In the joy of his new life, he said, “Did you ever see the sky so blue or the grass so green?”

Suddenly, the banker leaned into Rader’s arms—and died! One step to safety, forever.
