CHRIST the POWER of GOD: “…Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God” (1 Cor 1:24). A British ship landed John G. Paton and his wife Mary on Tanna Island in the southern New Hebrides (now called Vanuatu) on November 5, 1858. Armed guards stood watch while a rude hut was constructed for the couple, their new home at Port Resolution amid the fierce cannibals who inhabited the island. The ship left, it’s crew sure the Patons would not survive. True, Mrs. Paton and her baby died soon after giving birth, and John had to sleep on their graves with his musket to keep the natives from using the bodies for a feast! But he persisted, translated the Bible, preached the gospel, and labored in love for 30 years. At that point, a British commission visited the island and published a report, saying the former cannibals had now become “the most advanced and cultured of all the native tribes who live under the British flag,” transformed by the Lord Jesus.
