April 14 Petition Mission

“Make me walk in the path of Your commandments, for I delight in it” (Ps 119:35).

Does this sound like coercion, “Make me… for I delight in it”? I’ve never found that I needed to be made to do what I delighted in! Imagine Mother saying to her child, “Now I insist that you eat all your chocolate cake, and, if you do, I’ll let you have a few vegetables.” We always seem to find time for what we enjoy. The problem occurs when we treat God’s truth like cod liver oil—it’s supposed to be good for you, so you had better hold your nose and take a dose—rather than spiritual peaches and cream.

The psalmist thought of Bible study the way I used to look at the pirate’s map in the flyleaf of my children’s book, imagining the thrill of actually being there where X marked the spot, where the buried cask of jewels and ducats waited: “I rejoice at Your word as one who finds great treasure” (v 162). God has the map; He knows “the path.” Ask Him to lead you to some treasure today.
