CHRIST our ROCK: “When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I” (Ps 61:2). On Sep 6, 1838, the SS Forfarshire, with 60 passengers plus the crew on board, crashed against the rugged shore a mile from Longstone Lighthouse, breaking the vessel in two. The front half of the ship became stuck on the rock. The back half was swept away, and sank with more than 48 people onboard. At about 7 am, young Grace Darling, who lived with her father at Longstone Rock, observed a few passengers clinging to the rocks. She awakened her father William and pled with him to help her row out and rescue the survivors. They rowed two miles through high gales, then two miles back, returning again for a second load. In all, 18 lives were saved and Grace became a national hero. But growing weary of a round of invitations to speak of her exploits, she said to her father, “Take me back to the Rock!” So it is in all our storms, there is a place of safety found in our Rock!
