CHRIST the ETERNAL LOVER: “In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 Jn 4:10). Sir Robert Anderson, former head of Scotland Yard, in his classic work, The Silence of God, writes: “Men point to the sad incidents of human life on earth, and they ask ‘Where is the love of God?’ God points to that Cross as the unreserved manifestation of love so inconceivably infinite as to answer every challenge and silence all doubt for ever. And that Cross is not merely the public proof of what God has accomplished; it is the earnest of all that He has promised He will yet do.” I recall hearing a missionary tell of visiting his former Sunday School teacher, now racked with pain. “How can you see the love of God in this?” he queried. “We’re not smart enough to read God’s love in circumstance,” the teacher replied. “God made one great declaration of His love at Calvary, and after that we should never question it again.”
