CHRIST our MODEL of HUMBLE SERVICE: “I am among you as One who serves” (Lk 22:27). In His life on earth, the Lord Jesus raised three memorials to humble and sacrificial service. “Whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward” (Mt 10:42). Of the woman with two mites: “Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood” (Mk 12:33-34). And of Mary of Bethany: “She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial. Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her” (Mk 14:8-9). Each in its own way expresses the sacrifice of Christ in pouring out Himself fully and stirring us to do the same. —J.B.N.
