CHRIST our DEBT-PAYER: “Who gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession who are zealous for good works” (Titus 2:14). C.H. Spurgeon tells the following story: “Thomas Olivers was a loose living man till he was renewed by grace through the preaching of Mr. Wesley, and became a mighty preacher and the author of the hymn, ‘The God of Abraham Praise.’ Before conversion, he had been in the habit of collecting many debts. Having received some funds from a relative’s estate, he bought a horse and rode from town to town, paying everyone to whom he was indebted. Before he was finished, he had paid 70 debts, principle and interest, and had been compelled to sell his horse, saddle and bridle to do it. During this journey he rode many miles to pay even a single sixpence.” Christ paid to the last farthing our debt of sin. But now we owe a wonderful debt of love to share the news with others (see Rom 1:14).
