CHRIST the LAW FULFILLER and SUPERCEDER: “Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes” (Rom 10:4). The Lord Jesus made it clear that the law was good, and He had not come to destroy but to fulfill it (Mt 5:17). Benjamin Disraeli, the Earl of Beaconsfield, and British Prime Minister (1804-1881) once stated the following to a distinguished audience at Oxford: “Amid all the waves of strife and war and sin and tumult which swirl around us, there are two peaks which will never be submerged, Sinai and Calvary, the law of God and the love of God. These are the facts which matter.” Nevertheless, Paul reveals the difference between that law and that love: “What the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh” (Rom 8:3). Hallelujah! The law condemns the sinner, but Christ has condemned the sin while also saving sinners! —J.B.N.
