CHRIST the ANTITYPE: In His passion to reveal the fullness of God in Christ, the Spirit inspired many “types” to picture Him. The “anti” in antitype does not mean the opposite of, but the comparison of. It does not mean “against” but “over against” as a portrait and its subject would be placed side-by-side to see the likeness. The types of Christ are not mere similarities, but intended prototypes. He is illustrated by Adam as the head of a new creation, by Melchizedek as king-priest; by Moses, “A prophet shall the Lord…raise up…like me”; by Joshua, the OT Jesus, who does what the law could not do; by Boaz, the kinsman-redeemer who takes a Gentile bride; and by David and Solomon, whose overlapping reigns present the King’s two comings. But He is also seen in the Passover Lamb, the sweetening Tree at Mara, the Smitten Rock, the Bronze Serpent, and the Manna, as well as the tabernacle and the garments of the High Priest. How rewarding is a careful study of the types!
