CHRIST said, “I AM the Bread of Life” (Jn 6:35). Harold St. John writes: When Moses was about to start on his mission to deliver Israel, in answer to his question, God said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you’” (Ex 3:14). It is significant that in the Gospel where the deity of Christ is so prominent we find Him using the words “I am” so often, the seven “I am’s” of John. The first one, “I am the bread of life,” is in chapter 6. All four Gospels relate the feeding of the 5,000, but only here is the spiritual significance given. Seven times we read Jesus came down, like the manna fell on the dew. But the Psalm is quoted, “He gave them bread from heaven to eat,” and so it is not only that He came down, but that He came down from heaven… We have an eighth “I am” in Gethsemane, “Whom do you seek?” “Jesus of Nazareth.” “I AM,” He replied, and they went backwards to the ground, proving that He went willingly, or they never would have taken Him.
